Control your customer experience using a website hierarchy

While working on websites, we often see important pages hidden behind other pages rather than being on the menu. That’s why this week we are taking a look at the hierarchy of a website and the importance of structuring it correctly. This also compliments last week’s topic we discussed, speeding up your customer’s journey.

What is a website hierarchy?

The hierarchy, in the case of a website, simply is how the pages are arranged. The hierarchy works by having various levels, with each showing a different amount of importance. For example, your homepage is at the top with the about, contact, services, blog pages on the level below that. Below those pages are any sub-pages such as the exact services you offer or the blog posts.

Why is a hierarchy important?

The hierarchy plays a direct role in what pages your audience is likely to see once they decide to leave the homepage. Which means it plays a large role in the impression your audience is going to get about your brand. This also means you can subconsciously control where your customers decide to go on your website to promote a certain product or service.

Your website also needs a balanced hierarchy to make your customer’s life easier. There’s no point in having a structure where all your pages are equal. This would leave your customer with too many options and likely leave them confused or lost on what to click on next.

This example from edraw is a great example of a government’s website hierarchy. At the top is the homepage, and just below that is the options you will see on the main menu. Below are the pages you will see in the sub menu or on the pages itself.

How to structure your Hierarchy

Structuring your website’s hierarchy correctly isn’t as hard as it might sound. An easy way to start is by looking at other websites that are similar to yours and look at the layout of their menus. You can also look for example diagrams like the one we used above.

If you are a visual person, you can create a quick diagram of your own as well! Start with the home page at the top and work your way down in order of importance. We have created an example of our website’s hierarchy below to get you started:
